THE HISTORY OF DRESSAGE IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA
HORSE AND RIDER TRAINING IN WA, FROM THE EARLIEST DAYS TO 2000
This new book blends personal memories with historical detail to take readers into the long gone past, as well as down memory lane for some people. A History of Dressage in Western in Western Australia follows the progression of horse and rider training in WA from 1829 to 2000 as well as competition dressage. Yet there is much more to the story, which includes the development of horse sport and horse breeding in Australia. There is also the horses and the riders, from the hackies and eventers to the FEI masters of dressage.
In the book, so much of our local horse history is shown to have played a part in the origins of dressage in Western Australia. Before World War Two, there were the Light Horsemen, the Mounted Police, the West Australian Hunt Club, the riding clubs and the first riding schools. After the war, there were more riding schools, the Pony Club Movement, the WA Horsemen’s Association and the Equestrian Federation,
then the Dressage Club of WA. The memories, thoughts and comments of nearly 100 people cover the years since the 1950s. Featured in the book are the recollections of some of the first people to be introduced to dressage in the 1950s by Tom Roberts and Karl Jurenak. The
authors have selected particular occasions, such as the first school hosted by the Equestrian Federation and the 1989 National Dressage Championships, to provide a detailed ‘snapshot’ of people and horses. There is an extensive index which includes over 300 named horses.
Marion Hercock and Zoë Harrison have brought their different perspectives to the history. Zoë as the professional Dressage coach, judge and competitor; and Marion as the amateur pleasure rider.
A History of Dressage in Western Australia is illustrated and fully indexed.
ISBN 978-0-85905-750-9, published by Hesperian Press.
